Fingering in GC (→GE) & EE

Fingering in FE

Fingering suggested by the editors

..

The fingering in GC is written entirely with Chopin's hand. An identical addition was most probably a part of the base text to EE. In turn, in the base text to FE or proofreading of this edition, the same fingering was marked with a different set of numerals. In the main text we give slightly more accurate indications of GC (→GE) and EE, completed with the only numeral not included in these sources, yet printed in FE.

Eight long accents in GC

No marks in FE

Nine long accents in EE

Eight short accents in GE1

Nine short accents in GE2 (→GE3)

..

Lack of the accent at the beginning of bar 17 in GC (→GE1) at the beginning of bar 17 is most probably Chopin's oversight, who would add accents in these bars in GC. The sign is present in EE, whose base text was also probably completed by Chopin in this way. The accent was added in GE2 (→GE3) too. In FE there are no accents of dynamic character in bars 15-20.

In GE all accents were interpreted as shorts, contrary to the compatible, distinct notation of GC and EE (cf. the short accent in bar 20).

composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

 in AT, CDP & FE

 in AW

 in GC (→GE) & EE

..

An earlier pedal release is the original concept, written in AT, AW and most probably in [A], which is proved by CDP and the sign written by the copyist in GC. The sign was then deleted by Chopin; the composer introduced a similar correction probably also in the base text to EE. Leaving in FE the earlier version may point to [A] as base text for this edition – Chopin corrected both copies in this place, yet not the autograph (however, it is not the only possible scenario).

Octave in A (→GE), FE & EE3

Only A in EE1 (→EE2)

..

The single A in EE1 (→EE2) is the original version. It is proved by visible corrections performed by Chopin in A (→GE) and FE. The version with octave was introduced in EE3, most probably on the basis of GE.
