Rest in AI & FE

G in AF (→FEEE)

..

It seems that both published versions of the beginning of this bar were already present in AI, in which one can see a crossing-out of the crotchet, probably G, next to the rest. It means that Chopin hesitated presumably until the very end of the work on the publishing of the Mazurka, and maybe even later. In the main text we give the version of GE, just like in b. 134, in which a similar discrepancy appears. Both bars implement the same rhythmic and melodic scheme (co-creating the entire eight-bar section), which, according to us, implies that an analogous version should apply to both places.

Rest in AI

No rest in AF (→FEEE) & GE

..

In this layout, the rest in AI, although formally justified, could suggest the g note to be played by the L.H. Therefore, it seems that it could have been the reason for its removal in AF (→FEEE). Chopin omitted it also in GE. In analogous b. 167 the rest was crossed out both in AI and AF.

Crotchet f1 in AI & AF (→FEEE)

Quaver f1 in GE

..

In the main text we give the simplified – most probably by Chopin in [AG] – notation of GE. The only perceptible difference affecting the performance is the rhythmic value of the f1 note in the chord on the 2nd quaver of the bar.
In AI this bar is of draft nature, written hastily and containing numerous crossings-out. The final version corresponds to the one of AF.

Added version in AsI

Remaining sources

..

There are two versions in AsI – the earlier one, written in normal-sized notes, which we consider to be the text of this source, and the later one, marked with additional small notes. This second version, almost identical to the one added in AsI in bar 179, can be considered a first attempt at the final version appearing in other sources. The notation of the second version is not univocal:

  • The presence of the note c2 in the 2nd semiquaver of the lower voice is not clearly indicated. We assume that the intended voice leading on the 2nd quaver of the bar corresponds to the final version.
  • We add the tie sustaining the grace note b1 following the more precise notation in bar 179.
