b. 16-17

composition: Op. 30 No. 1, Mazurka in C minor

Separate slurs in FE (→EE)

Continuous slur in FC (→GE)

..

In the main text we give the continuous FC (→GE) slur, since in this manuscript one can see that the slur ending initially over the g1 semiquaver in bar 16, as it is in FE, was prolonged over bar 17 and further.

The initially written here three slurs, one in each bar, were then extended by Chopin in both preserved manuscripts, who connected the slurs between bars 18-19 in A, whereas in FC – between bars 17-18. In A, the situation is additionally complicated by the new line of text beginning in bar 18, as a result of which – as it is often to be encountered in Chopin autographs – it is unknown whether the slur in this bar is supposed to continue the one from bar 17 or not. The two possible interpretations resulting from this situation are reflected in the versions of FE and EE, which, however, feature the most probably inaccurately written ending of the slur in bar 19. In turn, GE inaccurately reproduced the ending of the slur in bar 18. In the main text we give the slurs of FC, corrected by Chopin's hand and compatible with the phrasing corresponding to the formal structure.

composition: Op. 30 No. 1, Mazurka in C minor

No marks in FE (→EE)

Long accents in FC

Short accents in GE

Chopin added the long accents in bars 17 and 19 in FC. In GE they were reproduced as medium marks, which we interpret as short – see bar 1.

The differences in the range of the  hairpin could be stemming from the notation of [A] – Chopin would often write these marks inaccurately, with arms of different length. A comparison of both sources controlled by Chopin in both analogous places (here and in bars 87-89) reveals three different kinds of range, out of which one occurs twice, in FE in bars 17-19 and in FC in bars 87-89. Taking into account the fact that a mark provided with such range can be found in both places and both sources, we consider it to be most representative and give it in the main text.

In FC both poco a poco cresc. - - - indications (in bars 17-23 and 25-31) are added in Chopin's hand, which means that they were also added in the stage of proofreading FE or to the basis of FE. The same in bars 49-55 and 57-63.
