b. 50-51

composition: Op. 28 No. 17, Prelude in A♭ major

..

In FCI the structure of all the accompanying quavers in b. 50 (from the 2nd to the 6th) is similar – 3 notes each in the part of each of the hands, hence c2 is present in all R.H. chords, while the chromatic step of the bass from the 4th quaver in b. 50 to the 1st quaver in b. 51 is not doubled in the bottom octave.

No octaves in  A (→GEFEEE)

Two octaves in FED and FEJ

Three octaves in FES

The editors' variant proposal

..

In the three teaching copies, the bass notes in  bar 59 were doubled with lower octaves. In FES the octave progression is consistently brought to the beginning of bar 60. In our opinion this means that Chopin considered the version with the octaves at least equivalent to the version of A (→GEFEEE), in which single notes appear.

b. 64

composition: Op. 30 No. 2, Mazurka in B minor

FC (→GE)

FE (→EE)

..

This is the most significant difference between the authentic sources – FC and FE – in entire opus 30. The FE (→EE) version, which is a clear improvement of the Mazurka ending, must have been introduced by Chopin in the proofreading of or in the basis for FE instead of the FC (→GE) version.
