The sources differ in the number of octaves written in an abbreviated form with the use of 8: three in CLI, the 2nd and 3rd in Ap, 3rd in FE. Both in GE and EE the use of abbreviations was totally rejected.

The version of CLI is undoubtedly earlier and less developed. In FE (→EE), and partially also in GE1 and GE2 (→GE3), the octaves in the L.H. are written in an abbreviated form.

The sense and authenticity of this sign in FED is doubtless, yet due to the much more powerful and longer-sounding bass register of contemporary pianos this variant may only be used with utmost caution.

Octaves in FE (→GE,EE

Lack of lower octaves in CLI is almost certainly a result of the copyist's error – the octaves are there both in the previous and in the next bars. In FE (→EE) the octaves are written in an abbreviated form with the use of the sign.
