Issues : No pedal release mark

composition: Op. 28 No. 9, Prelude in E major

No  in A (→FCGE)

 in FE (→EE) & CGS

..

Chopin would often leave the last  mark without the closing  asterisk – cf., e.g. the Prelude No. 7 in A Major. Therefore, the mark added in FE, most probably by Fontana, almost certainly does not correspond to Chopin's intention. The presence of a  in CGS is one of many details pointing to FE being the basis of that copy.

Pedalling in FE (→GE,EE)

In A the only indication concerning the pedalling is the  mark at the beginning of bar 15. The remaining indications were added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE).

() suggested by the editors

..

The absence of the  sign in A does not have to be considered to be a mistake – perhaps Chopin did not want to determine the moment of releasing pedal in a place in which most probably it is about gradually suppressing the sound (the so-called diminuendo pedal). The sign added in FE may be authentic, however, according to us, it is to be considered to be an orientation hint only – the pedal can be certainly held longer. In this case, taking into account a possibility of an arbitrary addition of  by the engraver or reviser, in the main text we suggest a solution encouraging the performer to creatively look for a way of releasing the pedal, offering the most satisfying dying away of the sound. Cf. the Etude in D major, Op. 25 No. 8, bars 19-20

Our suggestion

..

The  sign was added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE. In this edition (→GE1,EE2) there is however no , which same as in the other places (e.g., in bars 10-11 and 13) is probably an oversight. In the main text we suggest to complete the  mark by analogy with bar 8, yet also a longer pedal hold seems to be totally possible, as it was marked in later GE,s and EE,s.
