The  sign may be a mistake of the engraver of FE (→EE). However, Chopin's proofreading cannot be entirely excluded: it may be that the composer wanted to prevent the next fragment from being performed without pedal or, which is more likely, he was thinking about a short pedal encompassing the octave leap of the top voice in the R.H.

Not being certain whether the  mark added by FE (→EE) is authentic or not, we do not include it in the main text. Lonely  marks at the end of pieces are quite frequent in Chopin's works (cf. the Prelude in A, Op. 28 No. 7, bar 16).

The  sign in FE (→EE) was certainly added by Chopin – cf. analogous bar 179. In that case the composer also did not mark the place of the pedal's release. In the main text we suggest an addition, compliant with the revision introduced in EE.
