b. 28

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

The main version (AGEFEEE)

A variant recorded in FEFr

A variant written into FED

..

The additions in FED and FEFr may be regarded two versions of the same musical idea - syncopations in FEFr show the rubato performance of the quavers in FED.

b. 30

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

The main version (AGEFEEE)

A variant added in FEFr

..

The variant given by Franchomme seems recommendable as a variation of the motif upon its repetition that is very characteristic for Chopin.

A tie sustaining c sharp2 in A (→GE) and FEFr

No tie in FE (→EE)

..

The tie sustaining c sharp2 was probably omitted in FE (→EE) by the engraver. It was added again in FEFr.

Dynamic markings of A

Deletions and additions in FED

Changes written into FEJ

Changes in FES

Changes in FEFr

Our suggestion based on FEJ & FED

..

In particular sources, dynamic markings in those bars differ significantly. The version of A reproduced – despite various inaccuracies - in GE (→FEEE) was later fundamentally changed, which can be seen in energetic deletions and additions in teaching copies and FEFr.

The editors' proposal

..

We perceive the indication  in bar 50, added by Chopin in the three teaching copies and written into FEFr, to be part of a definitive change of the dynamic concept in several fragments of the Nocturne (cf. bars 25-26, 45-46, 52). The   noted by Franchomme in FEFr naturally supplements that change.
