Issues : Differences in fingering
b. 408-409
|
composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I
..
The fingerings of EE and FEH differ at the beginning of the sequence, yet in the further part, one of Fontana's fingerings is most probably compliant with the entry in FEH. It is difficult to say whether and to what an extent one of these fingerings comes from Chopin. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , EE revisions , Differences in fingering , Annotations in FEH |

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

The one written in FED between the staves may refer to f1 in the L.H. or to the g1 minim in the R.H. As the digit is placed closer to the L.H., since it touches the head of the 1st semiquaver, we assign it to this note. However, both in FEH and EE, the fingering was given only or mainly for the R.H., which proves that this part was considered to be more problematic (with which one cannot argue). Therefore, the entry in FED may also apply to the R.H., i.e. indicating the position of the 1st finger on a black key. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , EE revisions , Annotations in FED , Differences in fingering , Annotations in FEH |

Both Fontana's fingering in EE and the entry in FEH (most probably performed by the pupil's hand) differ from the Chopinesque fingering indicated in FED. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , EE revisions , Annotations in FED , Differences in fingering , Annotations in FEH |

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

The two ones written in FEH in the R.H. differ in font and type of pencil from the fingering in the L.H.; according to us, they could have been added by Chopin. The fingering resulting thereof differs considerably from the fingering added by Fontana in EE. The 1st finger indicated in EE on e1 naturally explains the use of the 4th finger on e2. In turn, it is not that obvious in the fingering indicated in FEH, since the last group of semiquavers offers a few possibilities of fingering – 5234, 5124, but also 5123. In the main text, we include the fingering of FEH, indicated probably by Chopin. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Differences in fingering , Annotations in FEH |

The concerted fingering of FEH and EE most probably corresponds to the Chopinesque one, which is confirmed by the entry in FED. See also the note to bar 410. In comparison, the differing fingering of FEFo stands out, written actually rather by the pupil than by Chopin. It does not exclude its possible authenticity, yet in the main text we take into account the remaining entries – FED and the three digits of FEH that may have been written by Chopin. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Annotations in teaching copies , EE revisions , Annotations in FED , Differences in fingering , Annotations in FEH , Annotations in FEFo |
