It is unclear whether the A mark is to be understood as a long accent or as a diminuendo – both versions seem to be musically acceptable. In the main text we provide an accent due to the shape of the mark, closer to accents. Moreover, according to us, the beginning of the tenor voice motif, emphasised by a slur, is another argument for an accent. In GE (→FE,EE,IE) the mark, extended between both crotchets, is definitely a diminuendo. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Long accents , Inaccuracies in GE |

The change of the type of accent in GE is a very frequent inaccuracy in Chopin first editions. The absence of the accent in FE (→EE) is probably one of the mistakes committed while proofreading bars 243-244 – cf. notes in the previous bar. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Long accents , Errors in FE , Inaccuracies in GE |

The accents in the L.H. in bars 245 and 247 have different length in FE, but they do not seem to be long, so both GE and EE reproduced them as short. According to us, it is still possible that Chopin wrote long accents in [A], which is indicated by the slightly longer mark in FE in bar 247 and evident long accents in the orchestral part of FEorch (clarinet I and bassoon I). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Editorial revisions issues: Long accents |
