b. 24-25

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

No tie in AI

Tie in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The missing tie to e2-d2 means that Chopin initially wanted this note to be repeated at the beginning of bar 25. The change of concept is confirmed by the corresponding change of slur – see the note in the next bar.

In the principal AsI version, the last bar of this variation does not differ from the previous ones in terms of texture. However, on the adjacent staves, an idea for a new ending was drafted. What is more, Chopin introduced there a correction to the first L.H. triplet: B1-D-F (as in A) was changed to B1-F-B, resulting in – assuming that the passage should be performed with pedal, which is quite obvious – a more harmonised sound of the whole. It is difficult to say why Chopin did not include this correction in A; nevertheless, we consider both versions to be equal.

b. 26

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

d2d1 & d in CLI

e2e1 & e in FE (→GE,EE)

..

CLI has d2d1 and as the 4th, 8th and 12th note respectively. It is the original version, probably changed by Chopin only during a proofreading of FE (a clear sign of deleting a note in print can be seen only where the note is).

b. 26

composition: Op. 25 No 7, Etude in C♯ minor

14 notes in GC (→GE)

13 notes in FE & EE1

13 notes in EE2 (→EE3) with fingering

..

In GC (→GE) Chopin wrote here a g note between f and a, increasing the number of the 1st group of demisemiquavers from 13 to 14. We give this version in the main text, being an expression of the latest proved decision of Chopin. However, the question whether it can be considered as the only final version of this run remains open. Chopin did not introduce it neither in the remaining two Stichvorlage manuscripts, nor in the proofreading of FE; it also cannot be found in any of the pupil's copies. Hence, the original thirteen-note version was accepted by him also after having introduced the correction in GC

The fingering of EE2 (→EE3) – see the adjacent note.

composition: Op. 25 No 8, Etude in D♭ major

g2-e3 repeated in A (→GE) & EE1

g2-e3 repeated in FE & EE2 (→EE3)

The ties sustaining g2-e3 are most probably a Chopin improvement introduced at the time of proofreading FE.
