Chopin would often leave the last  mark without the closing  asterisk – cf., e.g. the Prelude No. 7 in A Major. Therefore, the mark added in FE, most probably by Fontana, almost certainly does not correspond to Chopin's intention. The presence of a  in CGS is one of many details pointing to FE being the basis of that copy.

Slurs in A

Slurs in FE (→EE)

Slurs in GE

The versions of the editions are arbitrary attempts at interpreting the seemingly illogical slurring of A (→FC). Indeed, one could assume that the notation of A is inaccurate due to the crossings-out in b. 12, which forced Chopin to rewrite the R.H. part on the stave above. According to us, it could have provoked an unintentional shortening of the phrase mark, which would justify the version of GE. However, in the main text we keep the notation of A, which could have equally been intended by Chopin – the f1-b1 crotchet guarantees legato at the end of the bar, while the last quaver (c2) belonging to the preceding phrase is not as obvious as it may seem.

In A (→FC,FE1) there are no accidentals before the last semiquaver (in both hands), which, when interpreted literally, gives d1 and d. In FE2 was added, yet only in the R.H., where it is a cautionary accidental. GE and EE include naturals in both hands.

b. 12

composition: Op. 28 No. 18, Prelude in F minor

..

In A (→FCGE) there are no naturals before d2 and b1, since Chopin considered the previous accidentals before d3 and b2 to be valid. In FE (→EE), in which the first part of the roulade was written without an octave sign, respective naturals were added.

In the editions, almost all signs of accents were represented as short accents – the engraver of FE (→GE1) correctly placed the only long accent in bar 63, yet in EE and GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) it was changed to a short one. According to us, the notation of the majority of the accents of A clearly indicates their interpretation as long accents. Apart from the aforementioned, in the manuscript there is a specific for Chopin, rarely present sign of an inverted long accent – see bar 47.
