As in bars 128-131, in A the L.H. octaves are written down in an abridged manner with the use of con 8va. In the editions the octaves were written out in full. The absence of this indication in AsI could be merely a simplification of notation. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions; Source & stylistic information issues: GE revisions , Bass register changes , Abbreviated octaves' notation |

The sources have the lower notes of the L.H. octaves in bars 236-238 marked with the digits 8. We change that notation to match contemporary standards. The same applies to bars 192-199, 239-240 and 486-493. category imprint: Editorial revisions; Source & stylistic information issues: Abbreviated octaves' notation |

In EE and GC (→GE) the lower note of the L.H. octave, D, is written – as 8 – only in bar 239. That notation, when read literally, means the absence of both the tie and the tied note in bar 240. In FE, sustaining of the entire octave is written, also by means of an abbreviation, is a doubtless manner. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE inaccuracies , Inaccuracies in GC , Abbreviated octaves' notation |

In AsI in these bars, there is no indication that the bass line should be doubled an octave lower. It is likely that it is not an earlier version but a simplified, incomplete record, hence we do not regard it as a full-fledged variant. In all the remaining sources, the bass line is led in octaves, generally written down with the use of con 8va starting:
