  b. 17

In A the second part of the passage was crossed out and rewritten. The reason could have been, e.g. Chopin's mistake, who wrote the passage as if there were no octave sign over the first part thereof, hence without f2-e2-d2-a1. However, it seems more likely that it is a trace of the initial version of the passage, which started an octave lower: . The latter is supported by the fact that the octave sign seems as if it were added to the finished text, e.g. it overlaps with the accent. Broadening the span of the passage would also harmonize with the similar corrections performed in the previous fragment – see b. 16-17.
