FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: 14 IX 1842
Plate number: M.S. 3692
Title: Trois Mazurkas || No. 3.
Dedication: Monsieur Léon Szmitkowski

FE1 was based on AF, which is proven by, i.a. overall compliance of the texts of both sources and by the plate number of that edition written by the publisher at the bottom of the first page of A1 in the Mazurka in G no. 1. FE1 bears traces of Chopin's proofreading, most probably performed twice, since EE, which was based thereon, included some but not all changes introduced in FE1.

The changes included in EE – first stage of proofreading – cover, above all, the addition of cautionary accidentals, e.g.  before b in b. 151. All those additions could have been performed by the reviser.

Among the changes introduced in the second stage of proofreading (absent from EE) the most important are:  lowering g to g added in b. 69, sixth e-c1 substituted for fourth e-a in b. 140, and slentando added in b. 187. Moreover:

  • raising a1 to a1 in b. 6,
  •  was added in b. 76,
  • a long accent was added in b. 115,
  • a slur was extended in b. 132-133
  • cautionary accidentals were added, e.g.  and  in b. 149.

In mUltimate Chopin, we present a copy from the collection of Chopin's sister, Ludwika Jędrzejewicz (the copy does not bear handwritten annotations).
