Slurs

b. 265-266

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No slurs in A (→FCGE)

Slurs in FE (→EE)

..

According to us, the slurs combining with f and e1 with fare a result of a mistake of the engraver of FE, who placed them to the left-hand side of the chord in b. 266, whereas they should be ties, placed to the right-hand side of the chord. It is supported by the following arguments:

  • the almost certainly erroneous third curved line, which turns out to be a tie of c1 – see the adjacent note;
  • problematic purpose of this addition – in relation to the top voice, led in octaves, the slur over the entire phrase encompasses precisely the notes that are combined by the discussed slurs.

b. 268-269

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Separate slurs in A (→FCGE1, →FEEE) & GE3

Continuous slur in GE2

..

The reviser of GE2 assimilated the slurring over the b. 268-269 and 288-289 with the slurring of an analogous phrase in b. 369-370. It is difficult to find a justification for that decision: the unquestionable text was changed in three places (also in b. 390-391) on the basis of the fourth, questionable one (the notation of FC in b. 369-370 actually does not suggest a combination of the slurs). Therefore, it comes as no surprise that GE3 returned to the authentic version.

b. 274-276

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur to bar 274 in A (→FEEE)

Slur to end of bar 276 in FC

Slur beyond bar 276 in GE1

Slur to bar 276 in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The longer phrase mark of FC is the original version copied (somehow inaccurately) from A: in A one can see that when it returned to Chopin after having been copied by Fontana, the composer crossed out the original ending of that phrase mark and added a new ending 2 bars earlier. The long, continuous slur in GE1 results from a misinterpretation of FC, rectified in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 274-275

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slurs from a & c in A (→FC,FEEE)

Slurs from b & d in GE

..

The slurs of GE result from overinterpretation of the slightly too casually put slurs of FC, which clearly begin before the crotchet, particularly in the L.H. Such interpretation of a minor inaccuracy of FC confirms the predilection of the engravers of GE, known from other Chopin's pieces, for adjusting slurs and dynamic hairpins to rhythmic units, e.g. bars. b. 278-280

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur in A (→FC,FEEE) & GE2 (→GE3)

No slur in GE1

..

The missing slur in GE1 is a patent oversight, revised in GE2 (→GE3).
