2 arpeggio signs in FE (→EE)

Arpeggio sign in GE

Our alternative suggestion

The missing arpeggio in GE and a comparison with analogous bar 93, where the arpeggio is only before the chord on the 2nd beat of the bar, increases the credibility of the following scenario:

  • In [A], the arpeggio in the discussed bar was present only before the single chord with a span of a tenth, like in bar 93.
  • In FE, it was misprinted before the 3rd chord, which passed to GE.
  • In the last proofreading, Chopin added an arpeggio in the correct place.

At the same time, it is impossible to state whether Chopin had already accepted the printed arpeggio on the 3rd beat of the bar or whether the proofreading was implemented half-heartedly, leaving the second arpeggio contrary to the composer's will. Taking into account the fact that it is a hypothesis only and the fact that there are no entries in the pupils' copies, which suggests that Chopin was not bothered by two arpeggios in his pupils' performances, in the main text we leave the version of FE (→EE).
