GE2 - Second German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: (1860-1865)
Plate number: 5709
Title: Grande polonaise brillante précédée d'un Andante spianato
Dedication: Madame la Baronne d'Est

GE2 was developed in the first half of the 1860s. The edition was provided with an individual or collective title page, on which 7 polonaises by Chopin were listed, op. 22-61, except op. 44. The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin dates back to more or less 1864*.

A number of minor corrections ordering the notation was introduced, yet not always justified, e.g.:

  • sharps raising d to d in b. 34 and 35 were added,
  •  was added at the end of b. 36,
  • the grace note in b. 44 was changed to a slashed one,
  • the slur in b. 52 and 96 was shortened.

The source of some of the changes could have been a comparison with the original Stichvorlage, i.e. FE1, e.g. in b. 17, in which the R.H. slur was shortened.

In GE2 all accents that we classified as long in GE1 were unequivocally reproduced as short. In a few places authentic wedges were replaced with staccato dots, e.g. in b. 19, 52.
