b. 161-164

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

8 different accents in GC

5 different accents in FE

8 different accents in GE

6 short accents in EE1

8 short accents in EE2

8 long accents suggested by the editors

..

The accents in GC are of different length, which, considering the similarity of the motifs, is most probably an inaccuracy. In the main text we adopt long accents, which prevail in the notation. All the versions of the editions are most probably a result of an inaccuracy or revision.

b. 165-166

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

 in bars 165-166 in GC & GE2

No sign in FE (→EE1)

 in bar 166 in GE1 & GE2

..

In the main text we include the two-bar  sign written in GC and repeated in GE2. GE1 printed only a half of the sign on a new page, which, in turn, was repeated in EE2. No sign in FE (→EE1) is probably a result of the engraver's inaccuracy. Cf. bar 161.

Slur in GC, literal reading

Arpeggio sign in GC, contextual interpretation

No sign in FE (→EE1)

Tie to grace note in GE & EE2

..

The tie visible in GC before the chord means an arpeggio in this context. The version of GE, repeated then in EE2, is a result of a routine revision – the sign was moved to the side of the note head of the dgrace note, which gave it a form of a tie sustaining the grace note (cf. the note on the part of the L.H.). No slur in FE (→EE1) is most probably an oversight.

FE1 includes an erroneous c1 as the grace note, which was corrected in the next impressions.

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Pedalling in GC

No pedalling in FE (→EE1)

Pedalling in GE1

Pedalling in GE2

Pedalling in EE2

..

The pedalling in GC was added by Chopin. GE1 recreated it incompletely and inaccurately, which was completed – inaccurately – in GE2. The pedalling of GE1 was repeated and completed also in EE2. Cf. bars 179-180189-191 and 193-198.

b. 172

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

GC (→GE) and FE have a cautionary  before the 3rd crotchet in bar 172 (g). The superfluous sign was removed in EE.
