No signs in GC (→GE) & FE

Staccato dots to L.H. in EE

..

The staccato dots for the L.H., repeated after the authentic signs in the part of the R.H., are almost certainly an addition of the revision of EE.

Slurs in EE

Our alternative suggestion

..

Three phrase marks were probably added by Chopin in the base text to EE and, being the expression of the composer's latest intention, we give them in the main text. Our alternative suggestion includes a possibility of an inaccurate interpretation of signs by the engraver. Similarly in bars 238-242.

b. 51-53

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

Staccato dot in GC (→GE)

No marks in FE (→EE)

Two dots suggested by the editors

..

The staccato dot over the 2nd crotchet in bar 51 was overlooked in FE (→EE), which is proved by its presence in the respective bar of the recapitulation (bar 239). In the main text, we suggest adding a dot also in analogous bar 53, which is certainly to be performed similarly.

b. 52

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

In FE1 and GC the bottom note of the 1st chord in the R.H. is an erroneous a1. The erroneous notation must have been in [A], which is confirmed by an identical mistake in the recapitulation (bar 240). The patent mistake was corrected in the subsequent FE (→EE) and GE, which can be almost certainly ascribed to the revisers.

b. 54

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

No sharps in GC (→GE) & FE1 (→FE2EE1)

Sharps in FE3 (→FE4) & EE2

..

In the main text, we include the added in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4) – most probably by Chopin – sharps raising the f1-f2 grace note to f1-f2. According to us, it was probably a correction of a mistake. Similarly in the recapitulation – bar 242
