A - Autograph

Date: ⇒VI 1837
Title: 8me Etude
Dedication: Mme la Csse d'Agoult

A is a fair score, yet with a significant number of corrections and additions. We find here the whole range of Chopin corrections – "redoing" (e.g., g to a on the 4th quaver in bar 1, 5, 6), erasure (e.g., the same change in bars 2 and 22), deletion (e.g., in bars 3-5). The final, added in pencil, changes have a broader range in this Etude than in the remaining ones and they include addition of the metronome tempo in bar 1, fingering in bar 3 and change of the single A note into an octave in bar 19.

Some of the elements of the text, particularly performance indications, were most probably added after the copy intended for base texts for FE and EE had been prepared. It is proved by a kind of differences and similarities between the sources which are difficult to explain in another way:

  • in some places A is compatible with EE – mezza voce and molto legato in bar 1,  in bar 28,
  • in other ones similarities link A with FE – lack of diminuendo in bars 30-31,
  • in some others FE gets close to EE –  and dim. in bar 19, crescendo in bar 32-34,
  • there are also places in which all three sources differ so clearly that one can exclude a possible interdependence –  and decresc. in bars 26-27.

A lacks a few accidentals, e.g., in bars 3 and 10. The most serious defect of this kind seems to be lack of the flat returning d1 in bar 23.
