Slurs

b. 14

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

..

This bar opens a new line of text in A. Chopin did not finish the slur that in the previous bar (13) is evidently intended to be continued. Both a new slur, beginning on d2 in bar 14, and the analogy with bars 5-6 allow one to recreate easily the intended extent of the slur, which was done in GE (→FEEE).

b. 16-18

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

..

Both L.H. slurs in those bars illustrate very well the phenomenon of very broadly written slurs in A: both the beginning of the slur in bar 16 and the end of the slur in bar 18 reach the rest, which does not make sense in the context. Whenever such notation occurs - just like here - in obvious contexts, it does not lead to misunderstanding, but in other instances the editions often misinterpreted such notation  – cf. e.g. bars 21, 25 and 29.

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

The slur in A (→GE1FEEE)

GE2 (→GE3)

..

The point where the slur begins in that bar in  A is fairly obvious. The change introduced in GE2 (→GE3) results more from comparing versions of analogous bars 21-22, 25-26 and 29-30 than from any extra careful reading of A.

b. 18-19

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

The slur in A (→GE)

FE (→EE)

..

The slur of A (→GE) embraces only bar 19. When proofing FE (→EE),  Chopin moved the beginning of that slur one note earlier, making the phrase-marking here identical with the one in bars 22-23. He also made an almost identical change of phrasing in bars 30-31.

b. 20

composition: Op. 24 No. 1, Mazurka in G minor

An additional slur in A (→GEFEEE)

Without the added slur

..

We remove the extra slur over the triplet - see General Editorial Principlespoint 16. In analogous bar 28 that simplified notation was also used by Chopin.
