  b. 126

b in A (→FE,EE)

b in GC (→GE)

Determining the sound of the third intended by Chopin in the bottom voice of the R.H. in the 2nd halves of bars 126 and 132 is a difficult task. A (→FE1,EE) has the version we give in our edition. In GC (→GE) Chopin added a  in bar 126, changing b-d1 to b-d1. In a proofreading of FE2 (→FE3) Chopin added a  in bar 132, changing e1-g1 to e1-g1.

Below there is a list of thirds (majors or minors) featured in the particular sources:

  bar 101 bar 107 bar 126 bar 132
A Major minor Major minor
GC Major minor minor minor
FE2 Major minor Major Major

The list shows that:

  • all sources feature different versions
  • the supposition that Chopin intended to homogenise these places while reviewing GC and FE2 leads to contradictions, as in GC he changed the major third to the minor one, while in FE2 the minor into the major
  • assuming that it was Chopin's intention to differentiate these bars, it is the version of A that must be considered as the most perfect one. The remaining versions are probably a result of Chopin's mistakes following from hasty, random proofreading of these so similar places.

In a part of subsequent collective editions, taking as a start point the version of GC, the major third in bar 101 was arbitrarily changed to the minor one, giving a depleted, homogeneous version in all four bars.
