FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: VI 1833
Title: Etudes || No. 7
Dedication: son Ami J. Liszt

First French edition, based on A. The comparison with the autograph, as well as visible traces of corrections, reveal a number of more or less probable changes performed in print. The proofreading, same as in the remaining Etudes, Op. 10, included at least two stages (see the Etude in C major, No. 1). Chopin's participation in all stages and their broad range is proved by the preserved letters exchanged between Schlesinger and Kistner, their palpable proof is FEcor (in the Etude in A minor, No. 2). Among the changes introduced in FE1 one can mention: all corrections of the original versions enumerated in the characteristics of A, moreover, additions of accidentals, e.g., in bars 11, 13, 15, 40, 48, 49 and 51, pedalling in bars 16-23, articulation (e.g. slurs in bars 3-4, 7-8, 13 and 15, staccato dot in bar 8) or dynamics (e.g., in bars 6, 15-16). In bar 33 Chopin changed the enharmonic notation (e1 to d1).

Apart from the above illustrated changes and additions, being undoubtedly a result of Chopin's intervention, FE1 includes differences with respect to A whose qualification as authentic corrections is unclear or even dubious. It concerns mainly the overlooked, and sometimes also changed, performance indications, as, e.g., dynamic indications in bars 3, 6, 7, 20, 21, 26, slurs in bar 2. We analyse each of this place individually in order to, on the one hand, respect the possible latest intention of Chopin and, on the other hand, not to deny the performer valuable authentic indications, which could have been omitted by accident.

In spite of a multi-stage proofreading, FE1 is not free from evident errors, e.g., e1 instead of d1 at the beginning of bar 25, f1 instead of g1 in bar 27, lack of the  returning dat the end of bar 33, missing flats lowering b(1) to b(1) in bars 48 and 50.
