Pedalling

b. 3-4

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

in A

No pedalling in FE (→GE,EE

Our suggestion

..

In Chopin's notation, the  marks which are not followed by  usually appear at the end of the pieces. In other situations it is mostly a result of an oversight, yet sometimes it seems that Chopin wanted to emphasise a performance of a given fragment with pedal but without a precise indication of each movement of the leg. This is the situation we are probably facing in this place, as the marks of a pedal depressed on each quaver could simply occupy too much space. In order to avoid any ambiguity, in the main text we add con. In the editions the pedal mark was omitted. Cf. bars 11-12.

b. 9

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

No mark in A

 in FE (→GE,EE

..

Lack of  in A is probably related to the partially simplified notation of this bar – cf. the remark concerning the missing arpeggios. The mark was added in FE (→GE,EE).

suggested by the editors

..

In A these bars are not written out, only marked as a repetition of bars 3-4. However, unlike in A, in FE (→GE,EE) the  mark in bar 11 was not omitted and moreover a  mark at the end of bar 12 was added. The completion of the notation could have been a result of Chopin's correction, yet it is not certain (one could imagine the engraver's error who first engraved the  marks and then added  to them, already without consulting the base text). As we cannot be dealing with the performance of both bars with one pedal here, in the main text we repeat the notation of bars 3-4

b. 25

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

  in A & EE

 in FE (→GE1)

No markings in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

In FE (→GE1) the  mark at the beginning of the bar was overlooked. In EE the mark was added, while in GE2 (→GE3GE4) the  sign at the end of the bar was removed.

b. 26-28

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

Pedalling in A

GE1 & EE

GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

The detailed pedalling in bars 26 and 28 of A was inaccurately reproduced in the editions – in both bars the  mark was moved under the 1st quaver in the bar and in bar 26 the  mark was put too far.
