b. 22

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

2 slurs & 2 ties in A & GE

Slur & tie in FE (→EE)

..

In FE (→EE) the lower tie and slur were omitted, certainly by mistake. The error was corrected in GE. Cf. bar 62.

No slur in A

Slur in FE (→GE,EE

..

Chopin most probably added the R.H. slur at the time of proofreading FE (→GE,EE). Cf. bars 20-23.

b. 24

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Semibreve in A & GE

Minim in FE (→EE)

..

The rhythmic value of the chord in FE – a minim – is probably erroneous, as in the 2nd half of the bar there is no relevant rest. The error was corrected both in EE (by adding a rest) and GE (by changing the minim to a semibreve). In the main text we give the latter, compliant with the notation of A.

Fingering in FED, interpretation

..

The fingering printed in FE is certainly authentic, however, it includes a patent error consisting in switching the digits. Chopin partially corrected this mistake by writing '3' in FED instead of '2' for the 2nd note in bar 25. In the main text we give the already fully corrected version of this fingering, already introduced in GE. Fontana, while checking and adding the fingering in EE, also corrected this error.

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

..

In A there are visible traces of changes in the slurring in the L.H. The original slurs generally embraced four notes:
