FE2 - Corrected impression of FE1

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: VII 1833⇒
Title: Etudes || No. 1
Dedication: son Ami J. Liszt

The 2nd impression of FE1, probably performed shortly after the 1st one. It includes corrections of a few evident errors concerning pitch in bars 22, 44, 46 and 76. Chopin's participation in the proofreading of FE2 seems to be likely.

There are copies differing in the cover details: in the majority of them the error in the initial "J. Liszt" was corrected to "F. Liszt," while after X 1837 the indication "Ier. Livre" (1st book) was added in order to differentiate it from the just published Etudes Op. 25. The copy presented in our system, with Chopin's handwritten dedication to Napoleon Orda, belongs to the earliest, as its cover still includes the aforementioned error. FES is an example of a copy with the corrected cover.

FE3
In XII 1842, after purchasing the rights to the Etudes by Henry Lemoine's publishing house, FE2 was provided with a new cover and the plate number was changed to 2775. HL. No changes were introduced to the score, printed from Schlesinger's original plates. In mUltimate Chopin we present two pupils' copies, FED and FEJ, which are an example of FE3.
