b. 42-44

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

Single notes in CLI

Octaves in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In CLI the bass – except for the A1-A octave in bar 42 – is written with single notes. It may be the original version, yet an oversight of some or all signs determining the octaves cannot be excluded. The shortened notation can be seen in FE in the first octaves in these bars, which only partially was adopted in the remaining editions:

  • in GE1 (→GE2GE3) only at the beginning of bar 44;
  • in EE only at the beginning of bar 43 and in the entire bar 44.

b. 44

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

e3 in CLI, GE3 (→GE4GE5) & EE as well as FED, FEJ & FES

d3 in FE (→GE1GE2)

..

FE (→GE1GE2) has das the last semiquaver. The mistake is revealed by corrections in all three pupils' copies. The note was changed to ealso in EE and subsequent GE,s.

b. 44

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

b1-g1 in CLI, FE2 (→EE) & GE

c2-b1 in FE1

..

The version of FE1 is certainly erroneous, which is proved by the compliance of CLI and FE2, probably corrected by Chopin. GE and EE also have a correct text, which in the case of GE is probably a result of revision on the basis of analogy with the previous bars.

b. 45-46

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

FE (→GE,EE

CLI most probably preserves the original version of these bars.

d in GE

..

The d note in GE is a result of overlapping the mistake of FE1 and revision of GE: the erroneous note adopted from FE1 (without any accidental) was completed with a  by the reviser of GE, who above all was concentrated on completing the missing accidentals, therefore, it was adjusted to the Bchord. In a proofreading of FE2 Chopin changed d into B, restoring the version which – as shown by CLI – was the only intended one from the very beginning.
