b. 79

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

..

The  before the 5th semiquaver in A illustrates Chopin's idiosyncrasy, ocurring sometimes in his autographs, to write accidentals on a visibly different level than the notes they pertain to.

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No accidentals in A & GE1

 e3 in FE (→EE)

Two flats in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

Determining the sound of the 2nd and 14th semiquavers poses some difficulties. According to us, Chopin had in mind e3 and e2, respectively, same as in similar bar 76. In A, however, he forgot to insert a  before the 2nd note, such kind of oversights belongs to his most frequent mistakes – cf., e.g., bar 79. The version was included in GE1 through FE's review copy. The natural added in the last proofreading of FE (→EE) is probably an overlooked mistake of the engraver, one of a number of such mistakes committed in the Etudes and other pieces. The flats in subsequent GE,s are certainly an arbitrary addition.

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE)

Fingering written in FES

..

The fingering added in FE (→GE) in bar 81 – probably by Chopin – despite being totally correct from the pianistic point of view, is, however, contrary to Chopin's fingering of similar figures in bars 26, 77 and particularly 83. Due to this fact, in the main text we give the fingering added in pencil in FES. The fingering of FE was also not included by Fontana in EE, who proposed a solution modeled on Chopin's hints in similar bars, hence compatible with the annotations in FES
