b. 26

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

Rhythmic notation in FE (→EE)

Our suggestion

..

In the main text we propose an addition to the notation of the second half of the bar similar to the more precise notation of FE1 in bar 8 and GE in bar 22. The notation in FE (→EE) is probably authentic (earlier) and indicates a less careful development of the base text for FE1 – [A1] by Chopin.

b. 26-27

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

 in FE (→EE)

Our suggestion

..

Differences in placing the  mark can be attributed to not very precise notation of handwritten base texts of first editions, as in Chopin’s autographs the notation of pedalling is sometimes ambiguous. In the main text we propose additions to one of the source versions in order to ensure a clear sound of B major chord, also on contemporary pianos.

b. 26-27

..

In the main text we give the unambiguous mark in GE. The hairpins in FE (→EE) do not have to exactly reflect Chopin’s notation in [A1], as bar 26 in FE1 is the last one on the page, which could have influenced shortening of the mark.

In FE1 there is no  lowering gto g2, neither before the penultimate quaver in bar 26, nor at the beginning of bar 27. These patent inaccuracies were corrected both in FE2 and in EE. Moreover, in FE, both in the last octave in bar 26 and in the chord at the beginning of bar 27, all c notes have sharps. In EE the sharps are left only in bar 26. GE has a correct text in accordance with the modern notation rules.

In FE1 there is no  lowering f1 to f1, which was added in FE2 and EE. A suitable accidental is also in GE. Moreover, in EE there is a  in front of d2, the last quaver of the bar.
