Pedalling

b. 23

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

No marking in FE (→EE) & GE

Our variant suggestion

..

The  mark appears in the sources already at the end of bar 22. However, in similar situations, e.g. in bars 8-9 and 12-13, suitable marks are put a quaver later. Therefore, we consider this possibility – as an alternative one – also here.

b. 26-27

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

 in FE (→EE)

Our suggestion

..

Differences in placing the  mark can be attributed to not very precise notation of handwritten base texts of first editions, as in Chopin’s autographs the notation of pedalling is sometimes ambiguous. In the main text we propose additions to one of the source versions in order to ensure a clear sound of B major chord, also on contemporary pianos.

b. 33

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

According to the editors, both source pedalling versions are authentic and they can be successfully applied in practice. Therefore, in the main text we propose to juxtapose them in the variant form.

b. 35-36

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

The difference in the markings of pedalling between GE and FE (→EE) fits here into the framework of two authentic pedalling conceptions present in the entire Prelude. As, according to the editors, both versions can be successfully applied in practice, we propose to juxtapose them in the variant form.

b. 37-38

composition: Op. 45, Prelude in C♯ minor

 in FE

Our variant suggestion

..

The difference in placing  marks in GE and FE, generally in accordance with this kind of discrepancies in the entire Prelude, induces to consider both possibilities in the variant form. However, in this particular fragment we may suspect an inaccuracy of the notation of FE, therefore, we propose  in the middle of bar 38, in accordance with all analogous bars. A similar correction of the mark's placement was applied in EE.
