C in FC (→GE)

Chord in FE (→EE)

In the main text we give the FC (→GE) version, entered by Chopin instead of the crossed-out chord, preserved in FE (→EE). Chopin's corrections included also other elements of notation:

  • clarified and changed dynamics – the dashes marking the range of the dim. from bar 96 were extended to this place and  was added;
  • extension of the R.H. slur, which initially ended on the last b note in bar 100;
  • added pedalling in bar 101 (and three subsequent ones).

One can also see that the change consisted of two or perhaps even three stages, illustrating the growing need to refine the connection between bar 100 and bar 101 so that the first note played in bar 101 is integrated with the ending of the preceding four-bar section, yet without disturbing the impression that the main theme begins from the 1st beat.

  • Initially, Chopin added only a tie to G between bars 100-101, which physically connected the beginning of bar 101 with the preceding one. It could also be then that he extended the R.H. slur.
  • Next he crossed out the entire 1st L.H. chord and replaced it with a C crotchet.
  • The dynamics was probably the last element to be clarified. Chopin led the diminuendo to the end of bar 100 and already started writing  in bar 101 when he decided that it would be better to accentuate the beginning of the bar. Therefore, he transformed the unfinished  into  (he did it so carelessly that in GE1 this indication was omitted).
