Slurs in A, possible interpretation

Slurs in GE & EE

Slurs in FE

..

In A bar 505 is the last one on the page and the slurs in this and the next bar do not fit together – the slur in bar 505, although it does not go beyond the bar line, suggests continuation, whereas in bar 506 a new slur clearly begins. In this situation, the version of GE is most probably a result of Chopin's proofreading, since it seems to be unthinkable that the engraver of GE1 would have interpreted the slurs of the base text in this way on his own initiative. This conclusion is confirmed by the traces of corrections of this slur in print, visible in bar 504, cluster of the slur with the  mark in bar 506 and an earlier ending of the slur in FE, perhaps corresponding to the slur of GE1 prior to the final proofreading. The ending of the slur of EE reaching the beginning of bar 506 seems to be inaccurate, yet it can be a result of a revision.

The above variants show both sources versions of pedalling of the bars (all of them incomplete or unclear) and their possible interpretations and supplementation.

In EE the slur begins as early as in b. 541, close to its beginning even though there are no notes (no even rest) there.

In FE, the second slur in each of these bars runs from d1 to e1. This inaccuracy almost certainly results from lack of space – due to cramping seven great staves on a page, the space between staves in FE is very small. In GE1 (→GE2), the slur in bar 546 was left unchanged, whereas the one in bar 547 was moved to above the notes; like in the case of the first slur in these bars, the nature of the change (inaccuracy or revision, or perhaps an inaccurate revision) is uncertain. In EE and GE3, the slurs were placed higher, which we include also in the main text.

4 shorter, 4 longer slurs in FC

3 shorter, 5 longer slurs in FE

8 shorter slurs in GE2 (→GE3)

8 longer slurs, our alternative suggestion

In A the slurs over the characteristic quaver motifs generally encompass only the quaver groups in these bars (the only exception are the slurs in b. 554-555, reaching the crotchet at the beginning of the next bar). The remaining sources do not show traces of Chopin's influence on the range of those slurs. Therefore, taking into account the fact that the discussed figures are identical, in every respect, in the main text we unify the slurs, giving always the ones Chopin wrote in A more often. Such a solution was also adopted in GE2 (→GE3). Alternatively, we also suggest 6-note slurs, which are more frequent in similar motifs in the entire Scherzo.
