b. 12

composition: Op. 25 No 11, Etude in A minor

Slur in GC, literal reading

Slur in GC (interpretation), FE, GE2 (→GE3) & EE1 (→EE2)

Slur in GE1 & EE3

..

The slur of GC, reaching above the rest, is certainly inaccurate. The version of GE1 is most probably an attempt to confer it meaning while preserving its length. The change performed in EE3 proves (excessive) trust of the reviser of this edition to the text of GE1.

b. 12-13

composition: Op. 25 No 10, Etude in B minor

Two slurs in GC & GE2 (→GE3)

One slur in FE, EE & GE1

..

The inaccurately written slurs of GC are, however, according to us, separated. It cannot be excluded that it looked similarly in the base texts to FE and EE.

b. 12

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt IV

..

In GC (→GE) and FE1 (→FE2EE1) there are no naturals raising the 10th quaver to d1(2), which in this context is a patent oversight. The sign in the R.H. was added in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4,FE5), whereas in FE5 was added also in the L.H. A natural in the part of the R.H. is also in Afin, in which, due to the abbreviated way of notation of the L.H., it refers to both hands.

b. 13

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

..

The bottom note of the second chord in the R.H. was certainly corrected in GC from d1 to e1. It is hard to state clearly whether it is Gutmann's own correction or whether it was Chopin that noticed and corrected the wrong pitch while reviewing GC. Similar ambiguities resulting from corrected pitches of some notes appear repeatedly in the entire Ballade, yet in the majority of cases it is possible to determine what the original pitch was and to which one it was corrected. In some places the ambiguous pitch of a note in GC was misinterpreted and copied to GE.

b. 13-16

composition: Op. 25 No 11, Etude in A minor

Slurs in GC, FE, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

Slurs in GE1

..

In GC, the moment of beginning the slurs in bars 13 and 14 falls quite far before the dotted quaver on the 2nd beat of the bar. In spite of this, there is no doubt that they concern only the phrase led with the chords in bars 13-14 and its repetition in bars 15-16. The slurs of GE1 must be then considered as erroneous. Cf. bars 7-8.
