As in the case of bars 419-423, we unify the notation of these bars after the vast majority of analogous figures.

Pedalling in FC (→GE) & FE (→EE)

..

We consider the missing pedalling in these bars to be an oversight of Chopin in A: relevant markings were added both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE), they are also in analogous b. 346-357. Due to the discrepancies in subsequent sources, b. 452-457 are discussed separately.

b2 in A & EE

a2 in FC (→GE) & FE

..

The version of A is the original one, left by inadvertence: in an analogous situation, eight bars earlier, Chopin changed b2 to a2, and in the discussed bar he introduced an identical change in FC and FE. In the case of FE the change was introduced in the last phase of proofreading, not included in EE.

Slur to c3 in A

Slur to d3 in GE (→EEEE)

..

The slur in the R.H. starting in bar 462 reaches only the last note in this bar in A. It is almost certainly a trace of the original notation, which is supported by an extension of the slur in an analogous situation one bar earlier. Chopin's oversight was corrected already in GE1, most probably by the composer himself. At the same time, the visible traces of corrections in print prove that it was different slurs than in A that were subject to proofreading – it is likely that initially each of bars 461-464 was encompassed with a separate, whole-bar slur (bar 462 certainly was).

2 slurs in sources

1 slur – our alternative suggestion

..

In FE, one can see traces of proofreading of the slurs in bars 501-503 – originally, each of those bars was encompassed with a separate slur. If we take into account that Chopin combined also the slurs over bars 496-497, one can ponder whether leaving a musically unjustified division of the slur between bars 500-501 was intentional. It is likely that the proofreading was supposed to concern this place too, yet it was inaccurately implemented.
