Issues : Inaccuracies in FE
b. 2-10
|
composition: Op. 28 No. 23, Prelude in F major
..
The slurs in b. 2 and 6 (as well as in b. 18) explicitly encompass already the grace notes introducing the trills. In this situation, we consider the slur in b. 10 to be inaccurate; in the main text we suggest a slur analogous to the remaining ones. The notation of FC is vague – three out of four slurs run rather from the 2nd grace note (only in b. 6 from the first one). As such a notation is musically unjustified, we assume that the copyist meant slurs starting from the 1st grace note in all places, which is how it was interpreted in GE. As far as the end point of the slurs is concerned, according to us, the notation of A in b. 6 and 10 points rather to boldly written slurs (which were obvious to Chopin) than tenuto-slurs led to the end of the bar (see, however, b. 18). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Inaccurate slurs in A , Inaccuracies in FC , Tenuto slurs |

It is not clear whether the accent written in A was meant to be a short one or a long one. GE (→FE) has a short accent here, and the inaccurate placement of that mark in FE brought about its erroneous interpretation in EE. However, a comparison with the analogous bars 11, 51 and 59 points to the long accent option as being more probable. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Long accents , Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccuracies in FE , EE inaccuracies |

b. 3-4
|
composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

In Chopin's notation, the marks which are not followed by usually appear at the end of the pieces. In other situations it is mostly a result of an oversight, yet sometimes it seems that Chopin wanted to emphasise a performance of a given fragment with pedal but without a precise indication of each movement of the leg. This is the situation we are probably facing in this place, as the marks of a pedal depressed on each quaver could simply occupy too much space. In order to avoid any ambiguity, in the main text we add con. In the editions the pedal mark was omitted. Cf. bars 11-12. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Inaccuracies in FE , No pedal release mark |

In FE the slur in bar 3 (last one in the line) ends on the last note in the bar. The mistake contributed to the fact that bar 4 was embraced with a separate slur in GE and EE. In the main text we give the only correct and authentic slur of A. In bars 11-12 the version was faultlessly reproduced in all sources. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Inaccuracies in FE , GE revisions |
