Fingering

b. 105

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No fingering in A (→GE1FE,EE)

3-2-1 fingering in GE2 (→FESB)

3-1-2 fingering in GE3

..

The fingering added in GE2 (→FESB), whose authenticity is, after all, questionable, must be erroneous in this case. However, it is uncertain whether the mistake consisted in printing a wrong digit (2 instead of 4) or in switching the order of digits (2-1 instead of 1-2). GE3 applied the latter.

b. 114

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Fingering in AsI

..

In the main text we do not include the fingering of AsI due to the change of the rhythmic value of the b2 note at the beginning of the 2nd half of the bar, influencing the hand position – see the note at the beginning of this bar.

b. 114-115

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

Earlier fingering in AsI

Later fingering in AsI

No fingering in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

Our alternative variant suggestion

..

In AsI, in both bars, Chopin added a fingering with pencil; in b. 114 it was already a second version of fingering, replacing the earlier ink entry. In the main text we include the later version; as alternative solutions, we suggest the earlier version or both in a variant form.

b. 142

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

..

In A the last fingering digit in the 1st half of the bar concerning the R.H. (over f2) is 3, whereas GE1 printed there a 2 (by mistake). The mistake was corrected in all editions based on GE1 – in GE2 (→GE3) and FE the digit 3 was restored, while in EE the erroneous digit was removed.

b. 186

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No fingering in AsI & A (→GE1FE,EE)

..

In this place, the fingering added by GE2 (→GE3,FESB) is compliant with Chopin's preference – cf., e.g. the fingering of the repeated notes entered into the pupils' copies of the Waltz in E, Op. 18, b. 21-25. Therefore, it could be coming from him; however, for the reasons discussed in the characterisation of GE2, we do not give it in the main text.
