b. 222

e1-f1 in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

c1-f1, our alternative suggestion

In the main text we give the version of all sources. However, it seems likely that the introduction of the e1 seventh already on the 2nd quaver of the bar could be Chopin's mistake (perhaps by association with bars 211 and 219, in which the harmonic change occurs as early as on the 2nd quaver in the bar). In the entire variation, the harmonic background of the 3rd bar of each four-bar section is based either on two crotchet chords (four-bar sections nos 1-3 and 7-8) or on one chord filling an entire bar (four-bar sections nos 5 and 6). Therefore, the discussed place would be the only exception to the rule; in particular, it would be different from otherwise identical bars 214 and 238. In addition, it is difficult to find a musical reason for complicating the performance of bars 214, 222 and 238 with such an insignificant difference.
Taking into account the above, we suggest an alternative version, compliant with the indicated, analogous bars.
