In the main text we provide the version of FE1 (→FE2), which most probably resulted from Chopin's proofreading, implemented as early as in the copy of GE1 serving as the basis for FE1. The accentuated second scale degree, which is the central point of the characteristic, polonaise ending, is most often preceded by a note placed a third lower in Chopin's pieces – this combination is present in bar 290 of the Variations as well as:
- at least once in 6 out of 9 non-opus polonaises, e.g. in Polonaise in B
WN 17, bar 24 and 67, - in the Polonaise in C, Op. 3, bars 47 and 55,
- in the Polonaise in E, Op. 22, bar 32,
- in the Polonaise in C
minor, Op. 26 No. 1, bar 53, and in a slightly extended form also in bar 12, - in the Polonaise in A, Op. 40 No. 1, bar 40,
- in the Polonaise-Fantaisie, Op. 61, bar 70.
Nevertheless, as erroneous shifts of notes by a third belong to the most frequently committed mistakes in rewriting and copying notes, we consider the version of the remaining sources (undoubtedly authentic) an equal variant.
