The version of GE1 (→GE2) with a pianistically awkward and sonically unjustified cluster of g1 notes played by both hands must be erroneous. However, it is difficult to say how such a serious mistake could have happened when reproducing printed text. The mUltimate Chopin editors believe the following scenario to be most likely: in the proof copy of FE1 serving as the basis for GE this crotchet consisted of two notes, g
-e1, which was changed in the finished FE1, as a result of which it became a three-note chord, and in GE1 it was reproduced with a Terzverschreibung as an octave. The mistake was noticed and corrected in GE3, almost certainly on the basis of a comparison with FE.
