Longer slur in AI

Shorter slur in FE (→EE)

No slur in GE

..

The longer AI slur suggests that the FE slur could be inaccurate, as in several similar situations. However, the decision to leave out the rest after the 1st quaver in bar 74 in the published version could influence articulation in both discussed bars – the aforementioned 1st quaver is no longer the last one in the group, hence there is no visible reason to divide the slur after it. Due to the above, in the main text we keep the FE slur (→GE,EE) in bar 73, as an exception, and suggest adding a slur in bar 74. Further arguments supporting such a solution:

  • the likelihood that the slur in bar 73 was added in the last stage of the Chopinesque proofreading of FE1, the trace of which would be the absence of the slur in GE;
  • the authentic slur in bar 14, in which a figure including two quavers appears at the beginning of the bar, analogous to the one in bar 74.

Such a combination of the main text slurring is, on the one hand, compliant with the rhythmic detail in bar 74; on the other hand, it leaves the existing principal source slur unchanged.

Only quavers in AI

4 additional crotchets in FE (→EEC)

3 additional crotchets in GE

3 additional crotchets in EEW

..

The one-part writing of AI is the initial version, enhanced in the version prepared for print. The single omissions of the crotchet stems to e1 are most probably mistakes by the engravers of GE and EEW.

In AI the slur running further on, to bar 100, begins in bar 87. In FE (→EEC) it is added to the previous slur in bars 86-87. The change of slurring in this place probably resulted from the slowdown of harmonic changes in the final version and the associated introduction of sustained notes to the R.H. part, particularly b1. The version of GE is most probably a mistake – the long slur starts a bar too early, while the absence of the slur in bar 86 EEW is most probably an oversight.

Accent in FE (→EE)

Chopin added the accent either in [A] or only just in the last stage of proofreading FE1, which may be indicated by the absence of the mark in GE (unless it is an oversight by the engraver).

As 2 bars before, Chopin did not mark the pedalling in AI, which does not have to mean that he did not want the pedal to be used. The absence of  in GE probably resulted from an oversight.
