b. 55-56

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

Tie in AI & EEW

No tie in FE (→GE,EEC)

..

The missing tie to f in FE is almost certainly an oversight (by the engraver or by Chopin in [A]). In EEW a revision was performed, probably on the basis of a comparison with bars 57-60 and 61-64, in which both g and c1 are sustained for 4 bars.

b. 59-60

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

Tie in AI & FE (→EE)

No tie in GE

..

The version of GE is an arbitrary revision, probably resulting from an analysis of bars 53-64 in FE1.

b. 61-64

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

c1 tied 4 bars in AI, FE2 (→EE) & GE3

c1 repeated 4 times in FE1

c1 tied 3 bars in GE1 (→GE2)

..

The missing ties to c1 in FE1 are most probably an oversight by the engraver, corrected in FE2 (→EE). The version of GE1 (→GE2) is probably a revision resulting from an analysis of the ties to the top L.H. notes in bars 53-64, which we discuss in more details in the note to bar 55. In GE3 a third tie was added, perhaps under the influence of FE2.

b. 62

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

Minim in AI

Dotted rhythm with quaver d in FE1

Dotted rhythm with quaver d in FE2 (→EE) & GE

..

The version of AI with an f minim was replaced by Chopin in [A] by the version of FE (→GE,EE) with a dotted rhythm. However, in FE1, as in bars 58-60, Chopin almost certainly forgot about the  raising d to d in the last quaver, as a result of which it is a d. He added this sharp while proofreading FE2 (→EE); the accidental was also independently added by the reviser of GE, and this is the version we give in the main text.

b. 65-67

composition: Op. 63 No. 1, Mazurka in B major

f1 in b. 65-66 in AI

One dotted minim f1 in b. 65 in FE1 (→GE1GE2)

f1 in b. 65-67 in FE2 (→EEC) & GE3

f1 repeated in b. 67 in EEW

..

It is uncertain whether the version of FE1 (→GE1GE2) is authentic, since the Chopinesque proofreading of FE2 could have only added the marks overlooked by the engraver. If, however, FE1 reproduced the [A] notation correctly, the differences between the three source versions would mean that Chopin hesitated to the very end how long the f1 note should be sustained here. The EEW version probably resulted from an oversight by the tie to f1 by the engraver, while the GE3 version almost certainly stems from FE2.
