b. 1-4

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Single slurs in FE (→EE) & GE1

Double slurs in GE2

..

In GE2 L.H. slurs were added in b. 1-4; we consider them superfluous – in such parallel sequences, particularly those written on one stave, Chopin would be satisfied with single slurs, which should be regarded as referring to both hands.

b. 9-15

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In GE2 the L.H. beaming was changed in these bars by separating the quaver from the following two semiquavers wherever such a combination appears. We do not include those changes in our transcriptions, since they must be arbitrary and are generally of purely graphical nature. Likewise in the entire Polonaise.

Crotchets in GE1 & FE (→EE)

Only R.H. crotchets in GE2

Dotted crotchets suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest prolonging the separated R.H. octaves after the authentic notation in analogous situations in b. 37-40. We also suggest prolonging B in b. 13, since there is no visible reason to approach that note differently than the R.H. octave (this figure does not appear in the Polonaise in this form anymore).
While rearranging the layout of the L.H. beams GE2 omitted the additional stem to B in b. 13.

b. 16

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In the main text we include the naturals before the penultimate R.H. octave (d3-d4) present in GE and EE. The absence of those accidentals in FE suggests that they were not included in the manuscripts and that the revisers of EE and GE added them while correcting an overlooked cancellation of alteration (typical of Chopin).

b. 17-18

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In GE2 the entire R.H. part was placed on the top stave. It is the first out of many such changes – see the note to b. 24-26. We do not reproduce this inauthentic layout in our transcriptions, since the change does not influence the meaning of the text. Likewise in b. 43-44 and all subsequent analogous passages.
