Issues : Uncertain slur continuation

b. 125-126

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

4 slurs in GE

Slur in bars 125-126 in FE (literal reading→EE)

Slur to bar 127 in FE, contextual interpretation

..

The slurring was most probably changed by Chopin in the basis for FE together with the matching system of beams. However, the new, longer phrase mark was reproduced inaccurately in FE – the ending of the phrase mark in b. 126, at the end of the page (like in our transcription), suggests that it should be continued in the next bar, in which, however, there is no ending of that phrase mark. We consider the a crotchet in b. 127, which ends the phrase, having been left outside the phrase mark to be a mistake; therefore, in the main text we lead the phrase mark to that note.

b. 127

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

No slur in GE & FE (literal reading→EE)

Slur in FE, contextual interpretation

..

In the main text we add the ending of the slur, since in the previous bar its shape in FE suggested that it should be continued.

b. 140-141

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Slur to end of bar 140 in GE

Slur to bar 141 in FE (→EE)

..

The ending of the slur of GE1 in b. 140 (at the end of the line) suggests that it should be continued, although the last part of the slur is poorly visible. However, there is no ending of the slur in b. 141, and in GE2 the slur clearly ends on f in b. 140. In the main text we reproduce the notation of FE (→EE), confirmed by the slurs in analogous places – in b. 160-161 in GE and 199-200 in FE.

b. 227-228

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

..

In FE b. 227 closes the line, while the ending of the slur clearly suggests that it should be continued, which is not confirmed by the slur in b. 228, which begins from the 1st note. We interpret it as separate slurs, which is compliant with the notation of GE and which was interpreted as such in EE, based on FE.

b. 258-260

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

Slur to e4 in GE

Slur to c4 in FE, literal reading

No slur in EE

..

In FE b. 260 opens a new line, in which the slur from the preceding bars is not continued, although its ending in b. 259 clearly indicates that it should be continued. It is difficult to say whether this inaccuracy was related to the fact that EE omitted the slur. In the main text we give the slur of GE, which is certainly correct.
