b. 7

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

Small quavers in A (→FE,FCGE1)

Small semiquavers in EE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

Although the revisers of EE and GE2 used semiquavers in the group of small notes probably after analogous b. 25, Chopin wrote those notes as semiquavers also in the discussed bar – see the adjacent note. It cannot be ruled out that the change of semiquavers to quavers resulted from distraction at the time of copying this bar. Therefore, the version with semiquavers may be considered an acceptable variant of notation (actually, both versions indicate the same performance).

b. 12

composition: Op. 28 No. 24, Prelude in D minor

 in A (→FEEE)

To the main text we adopt the notation of the trill with a wavy line, in spite of the fact that in A Chopin wrote only . A comparison of all 6 bars with trills (b. 10, 12, 16, 28, 30 and 34) shows that Chopin considered both types of notation to be equal; he would write a wavy line wherever there was a bigger gap between the notes. It is difficult to say what was Fontana's motivation when he was adding a wavy line after the  mark in FC (→GE) here.

In the main text we give a trill with a wavy line, although all sources feature only . Chopin would write trills with wavy lines or without them, which does not influence the performance in the case of an ornament with a written-out ending.

The missing wavy line after the  mark is an inaccuracy of FC (→GE) and FE (→EE).

In the main text we give a trill with a wavy line, although Chopin wrote only  in A. The Chopinesque trills are written down with or without wavy lines, which does not influence the performance in the case of an ornament with a written-out ending. It is difficult to say what the motivation of Fontana was when he was adding a wavy line after the  mark and of the engraver of GE when he was omitting that element.
