b. 6

composition: Op. 28 No. 21, Prelude in B♭ major

..

The sources do not contain an accidental before the top note of the third on the 4th quaver in the bar, as a result of which it should be interpreted as e-g. It must be Chopin's inadvertence – the characteristic f(-d1) – e-g e-a sequence appears 10 times throughout the Prelude (excluding this place), always with g, even when it is preceded by a g-e sixth (in b. 41). Analogous sequences are to be found on a number of occasions also in other harmonic contexts, always with a minor third on the second quaver. Therefore, Chopin was fully entitled to consider the  to be obvious in this place.

In A the end of the L.H. slur in b. 6, which closes the line, clearly points to continuation, which is, however, absent in b. 7. In this case, it did not result in discrepancies in the remaining sources, since both FE (→EE) and FC (→GE) led the slur to the beginning of b. 7, undoubtedly in accordance with Chopin's intention.

In A (→FE,FCGE) there is a  before the d2 crotchet. In the main text we omit the accidental, which was also performed in EE. The use of g1 and g in the L.H. part in the previous bar and on the 2nd quaver in this bar provides the fragment preceding the discussed note with a minor tone, which probably resulted in the need to specify its pitch.

Slurs in A (→FEEE)

No slurs in FC (→GE)

..

The missing L.H. slurs in FC (→GE) beginning in b. 7 and 11 (as well as 12 – see note in this bar) most probably resulted from the copyist's inadvertence.
