Staccato dot in A

..

As was the case in b. 13, in the main text we include the staccato dot written in A and omitted in all the remaining sources.

b. 23-24

composition: Op. 28 No. 21, Prelude in B♭ major

Continuous slur in A (→FEEE)

Separate slurs in FC (→GE)

..

The broken slur in FC (→GE) may be explained by an erroneous interpretation of the notation of A, in which b. 23 closes the line. The notation of A is, however, unambiguous – both the ending of the slur in b. 23 and the beginning of the slur in b. 24 (in a new line) clearly indicate that the slur should be continued in this place.

b. 54

composition: Op. 28 No. 21, Prelude in B♭ major

2 bars in A (→FEEE)

1 bar in FC (→GE)

..

The absence of this bar in FC (→GE) must be Fontana's mistake, a so-called haplography, i.e. omitting one out of two identical elements of writing, e.g. letter, syllable, word, etc. while copying. See also the Prelude No. 12 in G Minor, b. 78-79.
