  b. 5

In A there is no accidental before the 1st note in the 4th group of demisemiquavers, which should therefore be interpreted as a1. It is a patent mistake – cf. analog. b. 1 – corrected in FC and FE (→EE). However, there is no natural in GE, which seems unreasonable if we take into account its presence in the Stichvorlage (FC) and a quite detailed revision performed in that edition.
It is tempting to think that the accidental in FC is one of the later additions of H. Scholtz; however, on the preserved photograph, it seems that it was written with a pen, and not in pencil, like the remaining additions. Unlike in analog. b. 1, in which Chopin crossed out the dispensable  before a2, here the  before that note was not crossed out. Next to the oversight of the accidental before a1, it proves that the composer was significantly distracted when writing the 2nd half of that bar.

We omit the cautionary  before a2 in the main text.
