New cresc. from bar 13 in A, literal reading |
|
In A the cresc. in b. 13, in this bar not preceded by dashes marking the range of the cresc. from b. 9, seems to initiate a second wave of growth of dynamics. However, the interpretation of this notation is not entirely clear, since b. 13 opens a new page in A, and it is likely that Chopin meant with it a continuation of the cresc. that began in b. 9 and repeated the mark on a new page only as a reminder. This is what the notation of b. 12 indicates, in which the dashes go beyond the bar line, thus suggesting that they should be continued. This is how it was interpreted both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE), placing the second cresc. inside the dashes running from b. 9. Moreover, Fontana entered the second cresc. only just in b. 14, which opens a new line in FC. He probably assumed that an exact placement of such a repeated indication is of no significance.
In the main text we reproduce the notation of A literally, since it seems to be more flexible – if we consider the cresc. in b. 13 to be a beginning of a second wave of growth of dynamics, we can reduce it, but we do not have to, hence this notation does not exclude any of the two possible interpretations. The version of FE (→EE) may be considered an equal variant.
