Slurs

b. 132

composition: Op. 43, Tarantella

A, FC3 (→FEIE), EE

..

In GE the slur begins on the second beat of the bar. In A the slur is not marked at all due to the abbreviated notation of bars 132-147. In the main text we present the version with the slur beginning where the bar starts.

In GE the slur beginning in b. 132 extends over to the chord on the first beat in b. 148.

b. 148-151

composition: Op. 43, Tarantella

..

In the sources bars 148-152 have varying slurs.

Since the manuscript A was partly burnt it is not possible to determine Chopin's slurring of the first two bars of the phrase. Due to the notation inaccuracies in FC3 and lack of the remaining copies we cannot tell for sure what the composer intended here. It seems almost certain however that the slur did not begin in the middle of bar 149, and given the characteristics of Tarantella's themes and inaccuracies of the slurs it may be assumed that most certainly the slur in b. 149 began on the quaver and not the beginning of the bar. Compare annotation in b. 149.

Moreover, sources FE(→IE) differ from the all the rest as here the slur extends as far as the chord on the first beat in b. 152.

b. 152-155

composition: Op. 43, Tarantella

..

In sources bars 152-155 are slurred differently. We see differences mainly in the first half of the phrase.

Given it is a grace notes phrase we may assume GE to be the copyist's arbitrary interpretation.

Similarly, EE version with a slur beginning in the middle of b. 154 also seems little probable.

b. 156-160

composition: Op. 43, Tarantella

..

Bars 156-159, similarly to bars 148-151 are slurred differently in  the sources. The main differences fall on the first two bars of the phrase. Cf. b. 148

In FE(→IE) the slurs extend as far as the chord on the first beat in b. 160, which is different from any other sources.
